He wijns...

I got my free copy via the Fullers club, and was very impressed – it’s just the kind of magazine I want. So I’ve sent in my form for a two year sub.

However I couldn’t resist sending in a comment for the attention of Andrew Burnyeat.

In his article Vive la difference he says: “. . . in Belgium wine is a four-letter word (okay its vin, which is three letters . . .”

That only applies to Wallonia, the French-speaking part of Belgium. In Flanders (where, arguably the best Belgian beers are made – that may be fighting talk!) the word in Flemish is wijn – so it really is a four-letter word. The sentence sounds much better without the qualification in brackets!

Quebec calling

I was given the January/February 2006 edition in my Christmas stocking by friends.

In reading through the magazine, I felt the need for putting on a bib or a napkin or something... drooling does not become us, but I couldn’t help it. And while Portland, Oregon is a long way from me, I’ve decided that on the strength of the article in the magazine, it’s going to have to be visited sometime soon.

I would invite you, however, to investigate the extremely lively beer renaissance that is occurring in my beloved home province of Quebec. We latched on to Belgian-style ales earlier than the Americans did.

In my home city of Montreal, we have microbrewers which produce superior quality beer, to such an extent that Austin, Texas based www.ratebeer.com ha.....
