Mount Shasta Brewing Co. based in the town of Weed, California, has upset the United States government for its cheeky slogan: “Try Legal Weed.” Brewer Vaune Dillmann faces possible sanctions or fines from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau if he continues to use the slogan on his bottle caps.
The authorities say it tell consumers to support an illegal drug. Dillmann, who says his bottle caps both promote his beers and the community in which he brews them, disagrees.
The town itseld is named after its founding father, Abner Weed, and for decades, Weed’s name has become synonymous with potsmoking humour.
Gas stations sell “High on Weed, CA” shirts and hats, and it’s a common sight to see college students posing in front of the town signs, flashing a thumbs up for the camera.
In his defence Dillman has pointed out that Bud, another well known American beer, is also slang for Marijuana.
“What’s the difference?” Dillmann said. “They sell Bud – we sell Weed.” Simpsonisms Homer Simpson: politically correct, he is not. Neither is he a particularly good advertisement for the modern, cultured beer drinker, but we still love him!
