Glynn Davis reveals what no self-respecting beer drinker should be without

One of the greatest things about beer is the infinite styles that are available. But with pubs, bars and stores now stocking increasingly diverse ranges of bottled and draught brews it can be confusing as well as exciting.

With this multitude to pick from the big question is what exactly should you include in your beer selection at home if it is to represent the world’s greatest beers?

To make this task significantly easier we’ve sought the opinion of some of the United Kingdom’s most knowledgeable beer drinkers.

Selecting the perfect beers are Mark Dorber, landlord of The Anchor at Walberswick in Suffolk and former boss of the legendary White Horse at Parsons Green, London; Richard Dinwoodie, co-owner of Utobeer and The Rake bar in London’s Borough Market; Zak Avery, manager of Beer Ritz in Leeds; and Glenn Payne, beer consultant and part-owner of Meantime Brewery and former beer buyer at British supermarket Safeway.

Starting at the more familiar end of the drinking spectrum, they all agree a classic pilsner should be included in any beer selection, and the unanimous pick is that Bohemian classic Budweiser Budvar. Glenn says: “It delivers a great hop hit to the unsuspecting.” Other recommendations include German brews Bitburger, Paulaner, Jever and Veltins along with Czech Pilsner Gambrinus.

Moving on, Zak suggests a sensible inclusion would be a beer from the British golden ale category, which began with Hop Back’s Summer Lightning and Exmoor Gold from Exmoor Ales, and.....
