A plea to brewers Dear Editor, I have a confession to make, I collect beer bottle labels. There, I’ve said it, I’m out and proud.
Someone, well lots of people actually, spend time and money designing the ultimate labels to profess the merits of their particular brews – it also helps to differentiate one brown bottle from the next. What they come up with is, for me, a pictoral reminder of the taste experienced at the time.
Man and small boy have long been collectors of strange and wondrous things, from dead insects to works of art. My compulsion though is two edged: to collect the labels one first has to drink the beer – it’s a hard job but someone has to do it.
But, I have a problem! Some paper labels come off easily with a simple soaking. Some plastic labels peel off cold while others require gentle heating in hot water to soften the glue. But the ones I hate though are those paper labels with a type of synthetic glue that will not shift, no matter how long you soak them.
My collection (such as it is) would have doubled in size by now if I could have recovered all the labels from those beers I have tried. I realise it’s a little “anorak-ish” to collect beer bottle labels but what with the apparent demise of beer mats from your local, what’s a chap to do, spot trains?
Via the pages of your illustrious magazine I would like to make a plea to the brewers out there, large and small. On behalf of all us collectors (surely I can’t be the only one) if you have to st.....
