Part time experts

Dear Editor, With reference the article in the current issue of your excellent magazine on Wells & Youngs, Jim Robertson is seriously deluded if he thinks the Youngs beers currently being produced in Bedford are a good match for the beers brewed in Wandsworth.

I am one of the people he refers to as a ‘parttime experts’ and I have drunk Youngs beers for many years. The current Bedford produced beers while perfectly pleasant and inoffensive completely lack the character previously associated with Youngs beers.

The current product is doubtless easier to sell to a wider public which no doubt suits the business plan but to call them a match for Wandsworth produced beers is well wide of the mark.

For your info I read your magazine in my local pub, The Cock Hotel, Wellington, Telford where the landlord has a subscription and the magazine is on display for customers to read. I think The Cock Hotel would make a good choice for an article in BotW, there is plenty to write about.

It is a totally beer orientated pub, catering for a wide market. It does no food (apart from superb local pork pies!) and has no machines, pool tables or music yet it is busy every night.

There are eight handpulls, always selling a mild, a cider and a porter or stout. The clientele is a real mix of ages and backgrounds but strangely it does not attract CAMRA members in.....
