Great British Beer Festival
This year, the world’s biggest beer festival turns 30. So what can we expect from the festivities?
The Great British Beer Festival is celebrating 30 years of being Britain’s biggest beer festival.
For those who don’t know, the GBBF is an annual event organised by the Campaign for Real Ale – the consumer group promoting real ale.
The first event was held in 1977 at Alexandra Palace.
For the second year running it will be held at London’s Earls Court, a huge venue in West London that last year accommodated some 66,000 people.
The GBBF styles itself as the biggest pub in the world, and it is that. Imagine a pub the size of an aircraft hanger; that serves more than 450 different beers from the UK and several hundred more from around the world.
Incredibly, the event is staffed by almost 1,000 volunteers. CAMRA geeks are knowledgeable and passionate about their beer.
There is food, live music, pub games, prizes, tombolas and quizzes, memorabilia auctions, and various stands selling books and merchandise.
