Cornish brewer making waves (St Austell Brewery)

St Austell Brewery is celebrating after winning a supreme champions award from the South West Independent Brewers’ Association. Dominic Roskrow joined in the celebrations

Have you heard the theory about Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon and the classic film The Wizard of Oz?

Some very sad person discovered that if you start the album on the third roar by the MGM lion at the start of the film, the music is perfectly co-ordinated with events on screen. I’ve never been bored or bothered enough to try it, but as a concept it has fed my imagination. On a stormy and very blustery winter’s day and aided by a pint of Broadside and a very rough sea, I stumbled on beer’s equivalent. Now I have perfected it, here it is. Feel free to adapt it as you see necessary.

This might just be the perfect way to enjoy cask ale and it sure beats the hell out of getting freezing cold in the water.

Moreover, for every time a surfer paddles out and catches a suitable wave you can have about six of these co-ordinated sensory experiences.

This discovery came at the end of a highly satisfying and enjoyable trip to Cornwall to visit St Austell Brewery.

While others will tell you it was sheer luck but was actually advanced journalistic acumen, I managed to time my visit with surfer-like precision to tie in with the announcement that Tribute had been chosen as Supreme Champion beer by the Society of Independent Brewers for the South West. Not sure how important that is? Then consider a very ecstatic Roger Ryman’s opening words when we meet at the brewery next morning: “The South West region of SIBA stretches right up towards Swindon and this is a very healthy area for b.....
