Bowled over

In honour of this year's Cricket World Cup in the West Indies, we've organised our own version, Beers of the World style

This year’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 takes place in the West Indies in March and April. What better excuse is there to taste beers from some different countries around the world?

So we took all the countries that are competing, picked a beer to represent them, and commenced our taste-off.

Unfortunately, our version of the World Cup did not take place on the sunny soil of St Vincent, Barbados or St Kitts, but at the Beers of the World head quarters on a rather gloomy day in March. Partaking of the beers were the BotW editorial team (much to their delight). Not professional tasters, mind you, just a token group of ‘real’ people with average (if slightly under-developed) tastebuds. It resulted in a few surprises, some of which you may disagree with, but after all, everyone’s tastes are different.

THE TEAMS
Australia – Coopers Pale Ale, 4.5%
Bangladesh – Bangla Premium Beer, 5.2%
Bermuda – Legends Export, 5%
Alright so we cheated a bit here. Bermuda are playing a substitute team since we couldn’t find a bottled beer from Bermuda. Legends is from Barbados.
Canada – Sleeman Porter 68, 5.5%
England – Marston’s Pedigree Six, Limited Edition 6%
India – Cobra Premium Beer, 5%
Ireland – Guinness Draught, 4.2%
Kenya – Tusker, 4.2%
New Zealand – Speight’s Gold Medal Ale, 4%
Pakistan – Murree Beer, 4.5%
Scotland – Deuchars IPA, 4.4%
South Africa – Castle Lager, 5%
Sri Lanka – Ceylon Pride, 5%
The Netherlands – Heineken, 5%
West Indies – Red Stripe, 4.7%
