The Strange World of Beer
Pretty in Pink
It’s one of the last great untapped markets. Just how do you get more women to drink and appreciate beer?
A microbrewer from Ishikari, Japan just might have found a way.
With help from 30 female students at Japan’s Fuji Women’s University, brewer Yasuharu Osugi has come up with Cana Story, a pink happoshu (a beer-like beverage with less than 67 per cent malt content).
It is literally pink in colour, and has been named after the place where Jesus turned water into wine.
The brewing team experimented with ingredients like Ishikari’s local rice blend, hoshinoyume, and the pinkcoloured juice from a herb called shiso that is produced in the region.
“We cut down the bitterness in the hope that female university students would like the taste, too,” said Yasuharu Osugi. It seems to have worked, in the University at least.
Lucky Ducks
When Dominic Worrall bought the New Inn in Hurstpierpoint, England, he was surprised to find that he was also the proud owner of two ducks.
Phil and Sweepy, who lived on the pond at the back of the pub, were unable to accompany the previous owners to their new home. So, in the interests of their welfare, they were included as part of the sale.
Mr Worrall told the Argus newspaper: “They were part of the inventory – part of the agreement. It seemed a bit of a bind at first and I thought the ducks would drive us quackers but now I think it is going to add character to the pub and be a bit of fun for the kids.”
